CARSON CITY, Nev. – Smokers in the Silver State are encouraged to quit the habit for 24 hours during the Great American Smokeout today.

Kristen Power, communications director for the Nevada Cancer Coalition, says those who put down cigarettes can start to feel better within minutes.

"Smokers will see a decrease in coughing and shortness of breath,” she points out. “If they can stay quit for longer than one day, they will have a reduced risk of infections, they'll have better circulation and lung function, and then long-term – lower risk of chronic disease like heart disease and cancer."

Power says research shows nearly 70 percent of smokers want to quit, and about half of them try to stop each year.

The American Cancer Society reports that tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S.

Despite the grim statistics, an estimated 42 million Americans, about one in five adults, still smoke cigarettes.

Power says friends and family members can provide vital support to those trying to kick the habit.

"To encourage them, to be there if they need a little bit of help, if they need some extra support, if they need someone to talk to, or they need someone to distract them just from that physical act of smoking by going out and doing something else," she stresses.

Smokers can also get more information and support through the Nevada Tobacco Users Helpline at 1-800-QUITNOW (1-800-784-8669).
