BISMARCK, N.D. - The deadline is just hours away for those North Dakotans who want to start the new year with new health-insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplace. For policies to take effect Jan. 1, today is the last day for residents to enroll.

Most can get help with the cost, said Kim Gillan, Region VIII director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

"So that's very important to not only look at the premium before and after you see whether you're eligible for that important component of financial assistance," she said.

Over the first year of the health-insurance exchange, Gillan said, around 11,000 North Dakotans enrolled and gained access to coverage.

Gillan noted that today also is a deadline for those who already have coverage through the marketplace to review their options and make any changes.

"If they don't do that or they don't choose another plan, they will be auto re-enrolled," she said, "and they will still have health insurance coverage come Jan. 1, 2015."

It pays to shop around, Gillan said, as there are more plans to choose from this year, and with the added competition, about 70 percent of current enrollees can find a lower premium plan in the same metal level.
