Oregon's Low-Wage Workers Rally for a Raise

SALEM, Ore. - Taking a day off isn't something many of Oregon's low-wage workers can afford to do. But some say they can't afford not to weigh in on the living-wage debate in Salem.

At noon on Saturday, a diverse group is expected to rally on the Statehouse steps in support of a minimum wage of $15 an hour. They'll hear from a list of speakers including Rebecca Sandoval, a home-care worker in Medford.

Home-care aides working for the state had gone for six years with a wage freeze at $10.20 an hour, before a new contract brought them to $13.75 an hour this month, Sandoval said.

"That made a huge difference in our lives," said Sandoval, who also is secretary-treasurer of SEIU Local 503. "I think that's the way we address the income gap, the disparity between the very top part of the income scale and the very bottom part. I think one of the most effective ways to do that, is to bring everybody up to a living wage."

About a dozen state lawmakers have indicated they'd support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. But a report by the state Legislative Revenue Office said families making more money could lose eligibility for safety-net programs or tax credits, which would temper the effects of a higher paycheck.

This week, President Obama's State of the Union address included a call for raising the federal minimum wage, which is now $7.25 an hour. While Oregon's $9.25 an hour ranks it second-highest in the nation, Tom Chamberlain, president of the Oregon AFL-CIO, said other states are catching up.

"Our minimum wage doesn't lift folks out of poverty," he said. "This just isn't an Oregon movement. Remember, a number of states adopted minimum-wage initiatives on the ballot. The way things are going, within three years, Oregon will be the eighth-highest in the United States."

Oregon lawmakers will hear a couple of proposals this session, including one that recommends a minimum wage of $12.20 an hour.
