GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. - As the summer season of severe weather approaches in Minnesota, a gathering this week examines how communities can best respond to the growing frequency of weather extremes and the changing climate.

Anna Claussen, director of rural strategies with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, says the focus of this statewide series of forums is on communities in rural Minnesota, as that's where the impact from weather extremes is often greatest and the concerns are many.

"Energy burdens on the community, the impacts on insurance, local infrastructure concerns, as well as the impacts on agriculture and how that's affecting their choices," says Claussen. "How they're going to handle extreme rainfall events is one of the large concerns in Minnesota."

In addition to urging action on the ground, Claussen says the event also seeks to make sure that rural communities and agriculture are considered when it comes to state and national climate policy.

"Climate change policy needs to guarantee the benefits and opportunities associated with this new economy are fairly available and shared for all, including rural residents," she says. "That also means climate goals need to be integrated into, rather than seen as overriding to, the community's sustainability and development goal."

This Rural Climate Dialogue runs today through Saturday in Grand Rapids and features a diverse group of local and state experts along with 18 Itasca County residents from various walks of life.
