AmeriCorps Service Programs On the Chopping Block

DETROIT, Mich. - Proposed cuts to federally-funded volunteer programs would hit home in communities across Michigan, according to supporters of the programs. Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which operates AmeriCorps, the Senior Corps, and other community-building volunteer initiatives.

She says there are currently more than 11,000 volunteers from these programs serving in Michigan, including a group that has been focused on a high-crime neighborhood in Detroit.

"They went in and boarded up houses, they cleaned up areas, and they had sort of a community-watch program," says Spencer. "And they reduced crime by 44 percent, saving the local police department $62 million."

As part of the annual appropriations process, a Republican-led proposal in Congress would cut $500 million from these programs' budgets, which would reduce the number of available spots for AmeriCorps volunteers by nearly 40,000, or roughly half.

Spencer argues Detroit is proof that investing in programs like AmeriCorps can save communities money and resources, and offers last summer's devastating floods as another example.

"We had AmeriCorps members deployed and again, they were helping engage volunteers, receiving donations, helping people on the front line," she says.

At a time when many Michigan schools are struggling to find the resources to address student needs, Spencer says the proposed cuts would drastically reduce the classroom support AmeriCorps members are able to provide.

"It may be the difference in a student getting ahead and moving on to the next grade level or not, when they have that individual attention of tutoring and after-school support that they need," says Spencer.

Since 1994, nearly one million Americans have provided more than one billion hours of service through AmeriCorps programs. This year marks the 50th anniversary of VISTA, which is now part of AmeriCorps, and was created to be the domestic version of the Peace Corps.
