North Carolina's One-Stop Voting Gets Underway

RALEIGH, N.C. – Voters in many North Carolina cities and towns can begin casting ballots today for November's general municipal elections.

One stop voting gets underway in a number of counties and runs through Oct. 31.

Josh Lawson, general counsel for the North Carolina State Board of Elections, says it's important to point out that not all municipalities with elections Nov. 3 offer the early opportunity.

"It's not as it is kind of in the general election years and every even year where early voting is always available,” he points out. “Early voting during municipal elections is only available if the municipality requests it.

“So it's not on everywhere, but the vast majority of the counties will have early voting. "

During the one stop early voting period, same day registration is available under an injunction from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Starting with the 2016 elections, North Carolina voters will be required to present a government issued photo ID, but that is the subject of ongoing litigation.

Elections were also held in some municipalities in September and early October. Lawson says each only drew about 8 percent of the voting population.

While smaller elections typically do not have high turnout, he notes they are very important.

"Those folks that are making the decisions about which roads get redone, which bridges get changed around and what the overall agenda of your town is going to be, those folks are elected in these types of elections,” he stresses. “So if you want to part of that process of selection you can get involved and you can do it during the early voting period."

Absentee voting by mail is available for those unable to vote in person, and those ballots can be submitted up to and through Election Day.
