CHEYENNE, Wyo. - People who are uninsured and have not signed up for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act have until Sunday to enroll.

Information and registration for the health-insurance marketplace, also known as "Obamacare," is available on healthcare.gov, but Wyoming residents also can get free assistance with finding the right coverage. Tracy Brosius, operations director for the Wyoming Institute of Population Health, said help is close by in most every city and town in the state.

"All of our services are absolutely free," she said. "We are here to educate and assist, at whatever level, if it's a basic question all the way to helping someone actually go through the website and fill out the forms."

Brosius said Sunday is the last day to sign up through open enrollment and get coverage for 2016. She said sign-up assistance is available online at Wyoming211.org or by calling 211.

Failing to sign up for health insurance by the deadline can end up costing you," Brosius said. "There are federal penalties for not being covered."

"If you opt not to enroll by Jan. 31, you will be subject to a tax penalty, which is $695 per adult," she said. "But that's the minimum. For an individual it could be as high as $12,000."

Brosius said 93 percent of Wyoming residents who purchase through the health-insurance marketplace qualify for financial assistance to offset the cost of their insurance premiums, based on income and other factors. Nationally, she said, eight out of 10 people end up paying less than $75 a month for coverage.
