Missourians Urged to Plan Ahead for Retirement

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - About 1.2 million Missouri residents are collecting Social Security or disability benefits - and for about a third of those people, it's their only income.

The average benefit is $1,344 a month, and Andrew Salata, public affairs specialist for the Social Security Administration, said the program was designed to be a safety net, not sole support for someone once they stop working. He said signing up for a retirement account online allows you to see exactly how much you'll collect when you retire - and that's key because if you don't think it will be enough, you can start another savings plan early.

"It reminds individuals about that planning process early on," he said, "and as we talk about what the financial plan holds and what else they'll need to look at, that keeps that focus throughout their working careers."

About 59 million Americans are collecting Social Security benefits, and more beneficiaries are women because they tend to live longer.

Salata said the process to collect Social Security is fairly easy, but disability benefits are another story. Those signing up for it get discouraged about being rejected, he said, but added that they should keep trying.

"Since we do have to be guardians of the Social Security trust fund," he said, "we do want to make sure that we're reviewing every case independently and correctly."

On average, disability payments are about $1,166 per month. To sign up for a personal retirement account, go to ssa.gov/myaccount/.
