JACKSON, Tenn. – It's the last traditional call for you to open up your wallet today, but organizers say it could be the most meaningful. Today is #GivingTuesday, and the international effort is celebrating its fifth year of existence.

While individual nonprofits are promoting their own requests for dollars from their community, people in Jackson are using the day to inspire a communitywide effort.

Allison Shipp, the director of vocational rehabilitation services at the Star Center, is one of the coordinators of Give Back Jack and says it goes beyond financial gifts.

"Giving back could be no money, it could be volunteering, it could be doing a random act of kindness, or it could be philanthropy, it could be giving some of your funds or in-kind donations - just a way to spread goodwill," she says.

The city also is supporting the movement, with a proclamation by the mayor designating #GivingTuesday as a day to give back. Shipp says their data indicates 63 percent of those who donate during the holiday only give on this day.

Shipp says Give Back Jack also is inspiring nonprofits such as hers - The Star Center - to support fellow nonprofits with gifts of time and talent.

"What we're actually doing is we're adopting another nonprofit, so on GivingTuesday even though, yes, we are going to try to raise our own money and do things for ourselves, we're actually going to give back to another nonprofit that needs some help with cleaning out their garden," she explains.

Organizations in 98 countries participate in #GivingTuesday. The day began in response to the popularity of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, in an effort to encourage consumers to set aside funds for nonprofits.
