TN Cities Review Zero Emissions Challenge

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — This week, industry and environmental leaders from around the world issued a challenge to the public and private sectors to pursue zero-emissions vehicles. It's called the ZEV Challenge, and it is something the city of Knoxville is considering after hearing about it this week.

Erin Gill is Knoxville's director of sustainability and said the city already has begun working toward zero emissions for its fleet.

"We will evaluate whether or not that Zero Emission challenge makes sense for Knoxville today,” Gill said. “That being said, we are actively looking at ways to integrate electric vehicles, both into our municipal fleet as well as our transit fleet."

The intention of the ZEV Challenge is that states, cities and businesses will use their purchasing power and policy influence to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero serves as co-chair of the organization Climate Mayors, a group of 406 mayors from across the country. She created the city's Office of Sustainability in 2011 upon taking office.

The Climate Group is one of the organizers of the ZEV Challenge, and CEO Helen Clarkson said it's about creating an economic motivator for the auto industry to keep up with demand.

"By putting all of that together, you get this really strong demand signal to the market that the demand is there for electric vehicles, and if they manufacture them, there are people there to buy it,” Clarkson said. “So really, it's about sending this strong signal to automotive manufacturers."

Gill said regardless of recent policy decisions at the federal level, the city of Knoxville is pushing ahead with sustainability.

"Local action is more important than ever in the absence of federal leadership,” Gill said. “We acknowledge that climate change is a challenge globally and that a lot of the solutions play out locally. "

The city's Energy and Sustainability Initiative has a goal to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions created by city operations 20 percent by 2020. Since 2005, city operations emissions are down 15.1 percent and community emissions have fallen 8 percent.
