CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Business owners are in the nation's capital today, urging members of Congress to protect more public lands before the lame-duck session ends – including in Tennessee.

Members of the Conservation Alliance, a group of outdoor businesses that advocates for public lands, are meeting with lawmakers in an effort to get several bills passed. Their wish list includes The Tennessee Wilderness Act, which would protect almost 20,000 additional acres of public land in the Cherokee National Forest.

Mark Deming, marketing director with Northwest River Supplies, says he's making the point to lawmakers that conservation is good for businesses.

"We're preserving an economic asset, generating revenue and providing jobs,” says Deming. “And not just in Eastern Tennessee, but across the state – and really, across the nation."

Deming says protecting wilderness has a dual benefit. According to the latest Outdoor Industry Association report, outdoor recreation in Tennessee generates $21.6 billion in consumer spending and supports 188,000 jobs.

Deming says the Conservation Alliance includes over 100 local business owners and organizations, and more than a thousand individuals, all actively supporting this legislation, which has languished in Congress since 2012.

He says the DC visit should remind members of Congress about the reasons to protect public lands and rivers.

"Recreation on our public lands and waterways has an impact that just has a ripple effect throughout out not only the ecology of an area, but also the economy of an area," says Deming.

He adds the Tennessee Wilderness Act would also protect those who rely on the Tennessee River for clean drinking water.

"This particular wilderness designation is at the headwaters of the Bald River," says Deming. “There's a number of streams coming out of there. Keeping those tributaries and those headwaters pristine has an impact on clean water, all the way down the river system."

Public-lands advocates are pushing for lawmakers to add protections before the 116th Congress is sworn in on January 3.
