BOISE, Idaho – ¿Qué puede enseñarnos hoy Thomas Jefferson sobre el medio ambiente? Varias ponencias que se presentan en la Universidad Estatal de Boise exploran la naturaleza a través de temas como este y otros. La serie de conferencias públicas "Idea de la Naturaleza" (Idea of Nature) busca abrir la conversación sobre el medio ambiente a través de diversas áreas del saber. Esta semana Peter Onuf, erudito destacado sobre Thomas Jefferson, habla sobre las ideas del tercer Presidente de los Estados Unidos acerca de la naturaleza, la democracia y el progreso de la humanidad. Onuf afirma que Jefferson tenía una fe sólida en que la gente mejoraría el mundo - y se pregunta lo que significa eso hoy, de cara al cambio climático.

"¿Podemos recuperar algo de fe en la posibilidad humana - caracteristica de la Iluminacion, cuando la naturaleza era vista como un libro y ese 'libro' era un objeto sagrado, una entrada al mundo? ¿Podemos, sabiendo lo que sabemos que le ha pasado al planeta?"

La serie es patrocinada en parte por "The Nature Conservancy of Idaho". Se presenta en la "B-S-U Student Union" el viernes a las 6 pm.

El mes pasado la serie presentó a Paulette Jordan, reciente candidata a gobernadora; y en abril, B-S-U recibirá a Bernd Heinrich, profesor de biología de la Universidad de Vermont, quien hablará sobre nuestros cambiantes puntos de vista sobre la naturaleza. La profesora de Boise State, Samantha Harvey, organizó la serie "Idea de la Naturaleza" (Idea of Nature) hace casi una década. Dice que se necesita una clase especial de alumno para vincular su área de especialidad con otras disciplinas.

"Siento que necesitamos mas de eso ahora mismo, cuando nuestras parece que se atoran nuestras platicas sobre la naturaleza. Y necesitamos formas nuevas de ver las cosas, y formas frescas de conectar las ideas, que nos muevan en este momento de cambio ambiental."

Onuf dice que la palabra "unión" fue clave para Jefferson en su tiempo, y también podría ser clave para el mundo ante el cambio climático.

"No significa disolverte como persona o perderte en un regimen totalitario. Significa satisfacerte a traves de tu conexion con otra gente, conservar tu integridad como persona autonoma. Me parece un bello sueno - pero no es solo un bello sueno, es una necesidad urgente."
