Hospital Workers: Premium Increase Could Put Health Care Out of Reach

PORTLAND, Ore. - Some workers at Portland-area hospitals are concerned that hiking their own health-insurance premiums could push them to the brink financially.

Members of the Service Employees International Union Local 49 working at the Legacy Health facilities say a proposed premium increase of nearly 9% in their contract negotiations could make it hard to get by.

Reyna Hernandez Orr works as a call center assistant in Legacy's food distribution office.

"Going to the doctor is something I kind of worry about," said Orr. "And health-care workers like me should be able to afford our health-care benefits, and afford to get care without worry about being broke or having to use financial assistance."

SEIU Local 49 says the current contract ends on Saturday. It represents more than 700 full and part-time employees of the hospital system.

Legacy Health spokesperson Brian Terrett said the hospital system is committed to remaining a competitive employer and has taken steps to ensure its benefits package aligns with the market. He said Legacy has had to adapt to the realities of the pandemic.

COVID-19 has, of course, added an extra layer of stress for hospital workers. Hernandez Orr said she wants to limit her hours in order to spend more time with her daughter and grandchildren, but can't.

She said her co-workers are in similar situations.

"We sign up for extra hours so that we can make ends meet with all our bills," said Orr. "It's not just me - it's other workers working doubles, too."

She said she's also had to pick up shifts while other workers are sick or out on leave.

Novel coronavirus cases have been trending upward in Multnomah County. Last week, the county landed on the state's pandemic watch list.
