UMN Fares Well in 'Socially Conscious' College Rankings

The University of Minnesota's flagship campus, along with some other regional schools, are included in annual higher-education rankings shining a light on social factors.

Washington Monthly, which has issued annual college rankings since 2005, bills its higher-ed list as an alternative which is more relevant to the public at large.

Paul Glastris, the publication's editor-in-chief feels other guides, such as U.S. News and World Report, place too much emphasis on things like prestige and wealth, but he noted Washington Monthly measures schools based on upward mobility, research and public service.

"Whether a college is creating the scholarship and scholars that drive innovation and economic growth and human flourishing," Glastris explained. "And whether a college is helping encourage their students to become active citizens, by serving in the Peace Corps, by voting."

The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities comes in at 39th. Glastris acknowledged some "name-brand" private schools are higher on the Washington Monthly list but added they have large endowments to create scholarship opportunities.

Its top 20 includes six public universities, while U.S. News and World Report only has one it is list. U.S. News declined to comment for this story.

Further down the Washington Monthly rankings are seven other Minnesota schools, including the University of St. Thomas and the College of Saint Scholastica. Overall, Glastris pointed out they want to highlight institutions that appeal to most college students but tend to be overlooked.

"The administrators who are out there trying to do the right thing; trying to make change in the right way against this, you know, terrible trend we have of ever-increasing debt and higher and higher tuition," Glastris noted. "We're trying to empower those folks by giving them some kudos."

While the main U.S. News and World Report guide is the one most often scrutinized, it does offer several other college rankings, including one for public schools. Washington Monthly provides a number of companion lists as well.
