Parent participation at school is often tied to a child's success. And this week, Texas parents are encouraged to engage as the National Parent Teacher Association celebrates "Take Your Family to School Week."

The pandemic kept both kids and parents at home, unable to strengthen partnerships with teachers and administrators.

Clay Robison, public affairs specialist for the Texas State Teachers Association, said when kids know family members care, they get better grades, pass their classes, attend school regularly, have better social skills and are more likely to seek out postsecondary education.

"It lets the child know that, yes, education is very important to your future," Robison emphasized. "And the parents who are involved actively with their children's education, know first-hand the work of the teachers, and they appreciate the work of the teachers."

Take Your Family to School Week continues through Friday. The timing of the week honors the day PTA was founded in 1897 on Feb. 17.

With the Legislature currently in session, the Texas State Teachers Association is seeking more money for public schools, which Robison pointed out are chronically underfunded.

"We're seeking specifically higher pay for teachers, and for support staff -- cafeteria workers, the bus drivers -- those kind-of people who the teachers can't do their jobs without them," Robison outlined.

Texas has a more than $32 billion budget surplus, and both Republicans and Democrats have signaled intentions to earmark some of the money for teacher raises.
