Organ donor recipients and their families will join Gov. Janet Mills at the State House today to highlight Organ Donation Month in Maine.

Advocates of organ donation say more than 1,300 lives were saved in New England last year because of individuals who registered as organ donors at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Thousands more people benefited from tissue donation, which includes eyes, skin and bones.

Matt Boger, director of government relations for New England Donor Services, said he likes to share the motto, "Have a heart and get a heart."

"Those individuals who are waiting really do appreciate the opportunity to continue their lives, and continue the legacy of their donors," Boger explained.

Boger pointed out more than 100,000 individuals are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant in the United States, including more than 6,000 people in Maine.

Boger noted the state plays an important role in the organ donation process, as the vast majority of people in Maine who register as an organ and tissue donor do so at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. In Maine, 58% of those with driver's licenses or Real IDs are registered as organ donors, compared to the national average of 50%.

Boger pointed out Maine is on track to be a national leader in organ donation.

"Even though Maine is doing a wonderful job at 58% in being a leader in the Northeast, we believe that rate can be even higher, and encourage people to check the 'yes' box and get the heart on their license," Boger urged.

Boger added organ donation can be an uncomfortable topic for some people to discuss, but he calls it the "true definition of humanity." In addition to registering at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, you can also sign up to be an organ donor online, at RegisterMe.org.
