ME Lawmakers Aim to Raise Minimum Wage to $24 by 2033

Maine lawmakers are considering legislation to raise the state's minimum wage to $24 an hour by 2033.

The current minimum wage of $13.80 would jump to $15 next year, and increase by $1 each year until 2033, when increases would then be determined by the annual cost of living.

Rep. Valli Geiger, D-Rockland, said while $15 is not a current livable wage, it will help push all wages even higher.

"If you work full-time, you deserve the dignity of being able to afford a place to live, to pay your own utilities, to afford day care, to be able to have a car and all the necessities of life," Geiger contended.

Geiger noted the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Living Wage Calculator shows Maine's average living wage is actually more than $16.50 for a single adult without dependents.

A minimum-wage increase will boost pay for up to 147,000 workers, according to the Maine Center for Economic Policy.

Geiger pointed out until Maine can fix its affordable-housing crisis, younger workers will continue to leave the state.

"Where I live in Knox County, we have less than a 1% vacancy rate," Geiger observed. "Most people can't afford a two-bedroom apartment, if they could even find one, which they can't."

It is estimated Maine needs more than 22,000 affordable rental homes for low-income renters alone. Housing advocates are backing legislation to invest more than $200 million into new affordable housing construction, tenant protections and rental assistance.
