En Kentucky, el fentanilo ahora puede estar mezclado con un tranquilizante animal llamado xilazina, lo que los funcionarios de drogas llaman la "tercera ola" de la epidemia de opioides. Según la Administración para el Control de Drogas, en el Estado Libre Asociado, xilazina ha aparecido hasta ahora en los laboratorios de la DEA en el área de Florence/Covington y en Louisville. El agente especial a cargo de la División de Detroit de la DEA, Orville Greene, explica que xilazina, también conocida como "tranq", es un poderoso sedante y relajante muscular que ralentiza el sistema respiratorio y puede causar heridas graves y abiertas. Él dice que xilazina está empeorando la crisis de drogas porque no es reversible con naloxona y por los terribles efectos que tiene en los usuarios.

"Uno de los desafíos adicionales es que las personas que se inyectan mezclas de drogas que contienen xilazina también pueden desarrollar heridas graves, incluso necrosis, que en algunos casos han llevado a amputaciones," mencionó también el entrevistado.

Xilazina ahora se ha detectado en drogas callejeras en 48 estados. A principios de este mes, la Oficina de Política Nacional de Control de Drogas designó oficialmente al fentanilo mezclado con xilazina como una amenaza emergente para los Estados Unidos.

Orville señala que actualmente xilazina no es una sustancia controlada por el gobierno federal, lo que significa que es más fácil de obtener y difícil de rastrear.

"Permite a los traficantes reducir la cantidad de fentanilo o heroína, por ejemplo, en la mezcla y, en última instancia, solo aumenta las ganancias. Es muy barato de conseguir," reiteró además Orville.

Un informe del Departamento de Justicia de EE. UU. y la DEA encontró que la prevalencia de xilazina en el suministro de drogas ilícitas aumentó en más del 193% en el sur durante los últimos dos años. Las sobredosis fatales de xilacina positiva han aumentado en más de 1000% en la región.
