Bowdoin Students Benefit from Job Training 'Bootcamp'

Students at Bowdoin College are benefiting from an innovative, student-led program aimed at taking the mystery out of career planning.

Each winter break, sophomores return to school three days early for a job training "bootcamp" to learn interviewing and resume writing skills, attend lectures on various careers and how to network with school alumni.

Kristin Brennan - executive director of Career Exploration and Development at Bowdoin College - said the bootcamp helps students get the experience many employers want today's job candidates to have, before they graduate.

"In their case, what they're usually looking for is a great summer job, or internship or fellowship," said Brennan, "but ideally it's the same foundation they'll need for doing job searching, too."

Brennan said student feedback helps drive the bootcamp and often finances top the list of students' concerns.

She said some lessons involve figuring out how much students will need to pay their bills, how to negotiate a salary and how to stick to a budget.

A National Association of Colleges and Employers survey found that only one quarter of undergraduates utilize campus career centers to help them land an internship or job.

Brennan said for many first-generation or low-income college students the bootcamp opens their eyes to what is possible.

"I think for everyone across the board," said Brennan, "just getting really comfortable with this idea of talking to total strangers about what you want to do with your life, and the fact that people are actually really willing to do that - so we practice it."

Brennan said its important the bootcamp happen at a dedicated time so students can focus on declaring a major and their future careers without having to also worry about exams, classes, or other activities.

She said its also a way to ensure equity and that all students have access to the same career-readiness resources.
