WI Recalls: Huge Amounts of Money Being Thrown Around

MADISON, Wis. - The recall of Gov. Walker is already the most expensive election in state history, and the primary isn't until Tuesday. The winners of the primary will face off in the recall general election on June 5. There are also four Senate recalls, but Mike McCabe with the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says it's the race for governor that's awash in outside money.

"Gov. Walker, he's raised over $25 million already and that's more than double the previous record for fundraising in any race for any state office in Wisconsin. By the time all is said and done, he'll probably triple the record or more."

None of the four Democrats running in the primary to face Gov. Walker have raised more than $1 million.

McCabe says the Walker money machine is humming along at a level never seen in Wisconsin history.

"We've got a couple of donors who are at $500,000 now, others at $250,000 each, quite a few who've given $100,000. Insane amounts of money are being thrown around, most of it coming from out of state."

McCabe says three-quarters of the donations coming into the Walker campaign are from non-residents - people who can't even vote in the election.

After tomorrow's primary election, McCabe says, outside money will begin flowing to the Democratic Party candidate, but he assumes Gov. Walker will have a clear advantage in total money raised. He says the June recall election will be by far the most expensive in Wisconsin history.

"This overall race is going to cost somewhere between $60 million and $80 million; it's really looking like it's going to be on the high end of that range."

To put that figure into perspective, the 2010 race for Wisconsin governor between Scott Walker and Tom Barrett was a $37 million election.
