Report: Drivers Paying the Price for Road and Bridge Neglect

PHOENIX - Federal officials say nearly half of the nation's highways are substandard and at least 71,000 bridges are deficient. A new report from the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) says one reason road and bridge maintenance is being shortchanged is that states are diverting federal highway money for new construction. The result, says Arizona PIRG Director Diane Brown, is higher costs for drivers.

"Rough roads cause accidents. They can damage vehicles, trigger traffic jams, and overall waste money that Arizonans can use for other expenses."

The report pegs the cost of rough roads for the typical Arizona driver at $207 a year. Brown is convinced the United States needs to adopt a "fix it first" transportation policy that puts more emphasis on bridge and highway maintenance. She says now, federal money intended for bridge and highway repairs is often spent building new roads instead.

"We see that elected officials would rather be at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new highway than to fill a pothole."

Brown says Arizona roads and bridges are newer than in most states and, therefore, in better shape. But the state still has more than 200 bridges considered structurally deficient.

"It means that a bridge has a major defect in its support structure, or its deck is cracking and deteriorating."

Unless Arizona makes bridge and highway maintenance a higher priority, she predicts many of the same problems here as in other states, with the transportation infrastructure increasingly falling into disrepair. The report, "Road Work Ahead," is online at www.arizonapirg.org.
