AZ Could Breathe Easier With Biofuels

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a symptom of the way we currently distribute and use energy in Arizona, but it's not the only symptom. Burning fossil fuel also has a major effect on the air we breathe, according to the American Lung Association. The group is advocating the use of cleaner-burning renewable fuels, such as E-85 and biodiesel.

Bob Moffitt of the American Lung Association says each car that switches to E-85 has a great impact.

"It will prevent about four tons of emissions from going into the air, every year. That's just one vehicle."

In the case of biodiesel, particulate emissions are greatly reduced, Moffitt says, and any diesel vehicle can use it without engine modifications. Biofuels are produced from renewable Arizona resources, such as restaurant waste oil, algae - even bacteria - and they don't have to be pumped from the ocean floor or transported great distances.

Biofuels reduce the need to drill in difficult and environmentally sensitive areas, Moffitt adds.

"It's a local fuel; we don't have to transport it a long way. And it's relatively easy to produce both E-85 and biodiesel."

The American Lung Association has created a website with more information about alternative fuels, www.cleanairchoice.org.
