PHOENIX - A new poll finds most Arizonans are concerned about the quality of education in the state, and many believe it's getting worse. The poll, conducted for the advocacy organization Expect More Arizona, also finds that 62 percent say education will be an important consideration when they vote this fall, but only 20 percent give it the highest priority.

Nicole Magnuson, director of Expect More Arizona, says people are dissatisfied.

"I think there's a clear frustration with the current system and the way it's being prioritized in Arizona. They want to see change, they want action, and they understand that they have a role in effecting the change that needs to happen in the state."

Magnuson's organization was instrumental in last month's approval of the Proposition 100 sales tax increase that benefits education. She says many of the grassroots parent groups that worked for Prop-100 are now involved in the Vote for Education effort to elect pro-education candidates.

Magnuson says local groups formed during the Prop-100 campaign are staying active by registering voters and signing them up for the permanent early voting list.

"Hopefully, across the state what you start to see is those same grassroots groups that were supporting Prop-100 are now picking up the Vote for Education message and carrying that through the state through their networks."

Campaign-style signs asking, "Are they 4 education?" have popped up alongside candidate signs across Arizona. Magnuson believes no candidates will say they're against education, but she says candidates truly for education are knowledgeable about education issues.

"They can talk to you about the need for improving standards, teacher quality, retaining talent, pushing for higher student achievement and graduation rates."

Expect More Arizona's stated goal is to make education the state's top priority.
