ALBUQUERQUE, NM. - Some New Mexico teens say they realize the economy and environment don't take a summer vacation, which is why they're hard at work hosting an event in Albuquerque today to show Congress support for building a clean energy economy.

15-year-old Akilah Sanders-Reed is a 1Sky regional coordinator organizing the event. She says big problems like climate change and the oil spill are sparking clean energy interest among New Mexico's "next generation."

"We're going to have a lot bigger problems and we don't want to inherit them. We want to take care of this, and to clean it up, and to really do what we know is right."

Sanders-Reed says many of today's teens in New Mexico are excited about the idea of careers in clean energy.

"New Mexico is one of the top states for solar and wind potential, and by investing in that, there will be clean energy jobs for us to go into when we graduate high school and college. There will be those opportunities so that we can move New Mexico up and out of being one of the poorer states."

Local youth will be joined by a panel of veterans, clean energy business leaders, and climate protection advocates starting at 11:00 a.m. at the South Broadway Cultural Center. They will also present Senators Bingaman and Udall's staff with more than 2,500 petitions and postcards from constituents who want to see action on energy and climate legislation, which Congress could take up when it returns next week.
