PHOENIX - Arizonans determined to "buy American" have a new website to help them make decisions in that area. A new database called "Job Tracker" lists 400,000 companies with records of outsourcing jobs overseas, as well as making layoffs because of national trade policies, and federal labor or safety violations. It includes some businesses in Arizona.

AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka says the list is not intended for political purposes, but to spotlight information that companies often prefer to keep to themselves.

"Like every issue, it will have political ramifications because of who supports the solution and who doesn't. But the primary purpose is not political here; the primary purpose is to formulate and enforce policies that will create jobs and help the country."

The data can be accessed by ZIP code or by industry. Arizona has about 60 companies listed for outsourcing jobs, plus thousands of businesses listed for labor law and OSHA health or safety violations, including more than 3000 in the Phoenix area. The Web address is workingamerica.org

Working America, creators of the Job Tracker site, acknowledges that it is nowhere near a complete record. However, it's expected to grow as people report instances of outsourcing and other labor problems.

Karen Nussbaum, who heads Working America, says researchers will confirm any new information before putting it online.

"We are concerned that there are going to be companies that are let off the hook, just because they have found ways to avoid providing information to the federal government on this."

The AFL-CIO estimates that since 2000 the U.S. has lost almost six million manufacturing and IT jobs to other countries. Corporations have said it makes sense to do business globally and can help keep costs down for consumers.
