‘Tis the Season for Medicare Drug Plan Sign-Up

PHOENIX - Arizona seniors sifting through their options for the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan have until the end of the month to make their choices; open enrollment ends December 31. Free counseling is available to help them decide on a plan. Stephanie Langguth is a counselor who helps Medicare recipients compare their options.

"Medicare is a personalized choice. Every person has different health conditions; every person has different drugs that they need to take. So, each person, even a husband and wife, may not be on the same Medicare drug plan."

According to Langguth, under the Part D plan this year, beneficiaries are covered up to just over $2,800. When that amount is reached, recipients pay the full cost of their medications out-of-pocket up to just over $4,500, when catastrophic coverage kicks in. She adds that thousands of Arizona elders fall into that so-called "donut hole," although the new health care reform law is expected to cushion the blow.

"In 2011, when someone hits that gap, instead of paying 100 percent of the cost of their drugs during the gap in coverage, they only have to pay 50 percent of the cost of name-brand drugs, and they get a seven percent discount off of generic prescriptions."

Langguth says counselors with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) can help seniors apply for benefits under the Extra Help program offered by Social Security that yields an average per-person savings of $3,500 a year.

"And actually, quite a few people are eligible and they don't realize that program even exists. And so, we screen every person that we talk with to see if they're eligible for Extra Help from Social Security. If they are, they have no gap in coverage and they get help to pay for their prescriptions."

SHIP counselors are located in all 15 Arizona counties. A list is available at www.shiptalk.org.
