Will Climate Change be on the Table at the Presidential Debate?

PHOENIX – Next week, the presidential candidates will face off in their first debate, and an environmental coalition wants to ensure the issue of climate change will be on the table. Petitions containing 120,000 signatures have been dropped off to moderator Jim Lehrer, asking that he pose questions to President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney about climate change during the debate in Colorado.

Mike Palamuso, senior vice president of the League of Conservation Voters, says it's important to go beyond the questions of whether or not climate change is real, but instead discuss ways to reduce global warming pollution.

"Many voters are going to be tuning into this presidential race for the first time during these debates. So, even if these candidates are discussing these issues on the campaign trail, it's important for this to be front and center on the national stage during this first presidential debate."

The debate is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 3, and will focus entirely on domestic issues.

Lehrer has already outlined some of the topics, which include a heavy focus on the economy. Confronting global warming is an important part of any economic discussion, says Palamuso, because solving the climate crisis means ushering in a new energy economy.

"It means ending our dependence on dirty sources of energy, bringing good paying jobs back to the U.S. building wind turbines, installing solar panels, types of technologies that will then also reduce harmful global warming pollution."

Palamuso says addressing some of the sources of climate change, such as the pollution from coal-fired power plants, is also a critical matter of public health. Some experts have linked particulate pollution to heart attacks, stroke and asthma.

In addition to the League of Conservation Voters, signatures were gathered by the Environmental Defense Fund, the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, the Climate Reality Project, and MomsRising.org.
