DENVER - Every shoe is connected with a story - and in Denver, more than 500 pairs of shoes were collected last weekend for the Heart and Stroke Walk.

The walking shoes were donated by people affected in some way by cardiovascular disease, and those on the walk strolled past the mountain of 1,000 shoes to reflect on the significance of heart disease and stroke - the No. 1 and No. 4 leading causes of death. Kayla Appleton, an administrative resident at HealthONE helped collect the shoes.

"It's a visual of what was happening in the community," she said, "an impactful reasoning of what we're doing and why it's so important."

So, now what for the shoes? Appleton said they're being donated to OneWorld Running in Boulder, a nonprofit that sends shoes to people in need in Third World countries. More than 17,000 people participated in the walk, raising $2.2 million to be used for research, outreach and education.

Dee Gonzales, a marketing business specialist at Xcel Energy who has organized a walking team for five years and assisted with the shoe project, said everyone she spoke with made a connection when she described the goal.

"They have friends or family or themselves that have suffered with heart disease or stroke," she said. "So, it really resonated with them."

It's free to participate in the annual 5-kilometer "fun walk." Companies, organizations, families and friends are encouraged to form teams and collect donations.
