Thousands More Arizona Kids Eligible for Low-Cost Health Coverage

PHOENIX - Thanks to a recent expansion of KidsCare health coverage, many thousands of Arizona children from lower-income families now are eligible to immediately join the program.

A KidsCare Summer Sign-Up drive kicks off today, targeting families who may not know their children are eligible.

Matt Jewett, director of health policy for Children's Action Alliance, said funding from hospitals and federal matching dollars have made the expansion possible.

"There is now room for children to enroll in KidsCare for the rest of this year without any enrollment freezes," he said. "And they've actually expanded the eligibility, so families can now make up to twice the federal poverty level."

For a family of four, that's about $46,000 a year, Jewett said. Premiums for the coverage run from $10 to $70 a month depending on income.

Jewett said the program has space for at least another 25,000 children and is available statewide.

"There are organizations throughout the state that we can help refer families to that can provide help with the application," he said, "including community health centers and other organizations around the state."

The expanded KidsCare only runs through the end of December, but Jewett said that's when the new Affordable Care Act marketplace takes effect.

"That is a place where families from KidsCare can transition to a marketplace where they can purchase private health insurance, with a tax credit that will help them afford it," he said.

KidsCare enrollment had originally been frozen in December 2009 because of state budget cuts. The current drive is designed to get children signed up before school starts, and especially target summer camps that offer food service.

More information is available online at kidshealthlink.org or by calling 800-235-9678. A kickoff event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon today at Excelencia School, 2181 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix.
