AUSTIN, Texas – Hoy miércoles comienzan las inscripciones abiertas al Medicare y se está urgiendo a más de tres millones de tejanos a que evalúen su cobertura actual de salud y medicamentos de receta. La ventana de siete semanas permite a los beneficiarios de Medicare hacer ajustes de acuerdo a cambios en su salud, estatus, ingreso, forma de vida o preferencias personales.

Trey Berndt, director asociado de defensoría de la AARP de Texas, dice que hay muchas opciones, así que la gente debe darse tiempo para encontrar la mejor opción de acuerdo a costo, cobertura, conveniencia y atención.

“Así que es importante entender cuál es la mejor opción para cada quién. Por ejemplo -explica-, si eliges un plan Medicare Advantage, más te vale asegurarte de que tu médico de cabecera y los especialistas que quieres consultar están dentro de ese programa Medicare Advantage.”

Berndt invita a que quienes tengan preguntas o quieran hacer cambios a sus planes, contacten directamente a Medicare. También pueden acudir a una agencia local para adultos mayores, donde hay asesores de los beneficios de Medicare que pueden ayudar a los tejanos a recorrer el proceso, sin costo. La ventana de oportunidad para inscripciones permanece abierta hasta el domingo 7 de diciembre.

Otro aspecto relevante al estudiar las opciones, explica Berndt, tiene que ver con la cobertura de medicinas prescritas. Según el plan Medicare, apartado D, si una persona no se inscribe en cuanto es elegible, podría terminar pagando más en los años siguientes.

“Muchos beneficiarios de Medicare dicen ‘Yo nada más tomo aspirina’ o ‘Sólo tengo una medicina de receta.’ Y nos parece importante preguntarnos ‘Estoy bien seguro de que sólo tomaré eso durante toda la próxima semana o el próximo mes?’ Cuando envejecemos, generalmente es buena idea tener armado un buen plan de medicinas prescritas, aunque actualmente no tomemos muchos medicamentos de receta.”
