West Virginia radio stations will soon have another resource for local news. West Virginia News Service will offer timely stories on important social, economic and community issues that affect people across the state.

The service is operated by a small company, Public News Service, and supported primarily by memberships, grants and gifts. West Virginia News Service will pursue stories based on the independent producer's judgment about which stories are of the greatest significance and interest to West Virginia listeners.

"Stations will receive a script by fax or e-mail that broadcasters can edit as they see fit. To access the audio clips, just download files from the Web page, or c all the tollfree number to record the soundbites."

WVNS Managing Editor Lark Corbeil says the new service is currently looking for a key component of the West Virginia coverage: a local news producer with a passion for civic journalism and a keen eye for crafting solid public interest stories.

The service is free to broadcasters for unrestricted use, and you can learn more about it on the Web site. The audio clips available on the Web page are digital quality, easy to upload and incorporate into newscasts.

To access the audio and scripts, go to www.newsservice.org. Enter the account ID number, which may be found near the top of this page.
