ND State Workers Celebrate Legislative Gains Today

May 1, 2007

Public employees say they have a lot to celebrate this May Day, thanks to gains in the just-ended legislative session. Leaders of the North Dakota Public Employees Association say they saw progress in issues including equitable pay for state agency workers and teachers in higher education. Executive Director Jodee Buhr says the group is gathering today in Bismarck to celebrate these gains, and area lawmakers are invited to join in.

“We have invited all state employees, members and potential members to come because everyone contributed in some way to this success.”

Buhr notes another key gain was a law protecting state workers from reprisals when they contact state lawmakers. She says that guarantees state employees the same rights as other North Dakota citizens.

Buhr adds that North Dakota citizens also win out because the changes will translate into higher quality state services.

“This will help agencies to retain quality employees. It also is a plus for new employees who may want to go to work for state government.”
