"Bee Mine" - Call for Investigation into Honeybee Disappearance in OH

May 7, 2007

It has all the hallmarks of a suspense thriller. Honeybees dying and disappearing by the millions in Ohio, and other states, and very few clues as to what's happening. In Northeastern Ohio, some bees probably starved over the tough winter. But the disappearance of millions of other bees is a mystery. Ronnie Cummins with the Organic Consumers Associationsays he hopes Ohio does some serious detective work and sifts through all the theories floating around.

“Whether it's pesticides, or genetically-engineered crops, or cell phones and high-voltage power lines, we'd better pay attention.”

Cummins thinks it's likely a combination of factors that leads to bees leaving the hive and never returning. He believes it's an investigation worth financial investment since 30 percent of the food supply depends on honeybee pollination.

Cummins adds that there needs to be more of a sense of urgency in getting to the bottom of the honeybee mystery.

“[We need to act] before we cause an irreversible decline in an insect that we absolutely need for our survival.”
