Several dozen people say they'll rally outside the Governor's office today with a revised version of the "Health and Human Services" bill he vetoed last week. They say it includes funding for health care for kids and seniors and promotes independence for persons with disabilities. Organizer Joe Pederson says Minnesota kids have a big stake in the legislation because it provides health insurance for around 40,000 uninsured children.

"We're moving in the wrong direction and very rapidly. More children are in poverty daily in Minnesota, and a big part of that is health care."

The bill also promotes health care for seniors, more independence for people with disabilities and funding for the state's mental health system. The governor says he vetoed the bill because of its price tag of $355 million. The new one, expected to reach his desk today or tomorrow, is about $50 million lighter.

Pederson adds that the bill addresses important needs for seniors.

"First of all, we need to make sure that prescription drugs are affordable. We need to make sure housing is affordable for these folks, as well. Finally, we need to make sure that there is general health care available to them, beyond Medicare, because Medicare is not comprehensively covering all costs."

He notes another important provision is funding for the "Commission on Poverty," approved by the last Legislature and designed to find ways to eliminate poverty in Minnesota.
