Minnesota Farmers Markets in Full Bloom

Thursday, August 16, 2007

Mid-August in the Midwest, and the farmers’ market season is in full bloom. Doug Nopar with the Minnesota-based Organic and Sustainable Education Service says this is prime-time to get healthful food and to support local producers.

"This is the best opportunity we have, as consumers, to buy the most fresh, the most nutritious, the most healthful food we can get. Much of it is grown organically. We can be buying directly from the farmers themselves. It’s just important for our health, and it’s important for the local economy."

He adds that shoppers also have an opportunity to learn how their food is produced, and by whom.

Nopar believes the markets are a good deal for everyone.

"The farmer benefits. The farmer can then spend that money locally in their own community and support their families. It’s a real direct connection between the consumer and the farmer, and that really benefits everybody in the area."

State officials report there are over 100 farmers’ markets statewide. Most are listed online at www.minnesotagrowth.com.
Brian Erickson at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture says more consumers want to buy directly from the producer for various reasons.

"Some people shop the farmers’ markets simply because they love the environment. They have a lot of fun going out there. And, some people shop there because they want to buy direct from the grower. You can go to the grower and you can ask them 'How did you raise your products?' Some of them raise organic products, some of them raise sustainable products. There are also consumers that want to support the local economy and small farmers."
