CA Health Reform – Last Shot to Fix the System

September 11, 2007

Sacramento, CA - The debate about healthcare reform lasted into the night as the California legislature tried one last time to pass a health package. The final proposal includes ways to control costs while expanding coverage to millions of Californians through their workplaces, public insurance programs, and the open market.

Anthony Wright with Health Access California calls the result a bi-partisan compromise.

"It doesn't do everything right now, but it's a good proposal that will help consumers by dramatically expanding coverage to millions of Californians. It will make coverage more available, more affordable, and more automatic."

Wright cautions that the bill doesn't solve the state's healthcare crisis; that it will take a mix of legislation and successful ballot proposals to accomplish that goal. He adds the plan also fits the framework of the Governor's vision for healthcare reform. Opponents counter that it does not do a good enough job of cost containment.
