Sunapee Highlands Among Nation’s “Most Important to Protect”

October 1, 2007

Newport, NH – Naturalists across the country have joined the call to protect New Hampshire's Sunapee Highlands. The Sierra Club has included the region in its' list of 52 places where environmental protection is most important places over the next ten years.

New Hampshire Sierra Club director Kurt Ehrenberg says that's because of its unique combination of large unspoiled forests and close proximity to most of New Hampshire's residents.

"It's important because it's a place where we have some beautiful lakes and forests in an accessible area."

Ehrenberg says the Club is joining with local organizations to ensure that unspoiled land will still exist in New Hampshire, south of the Notches and outside the White Mountains.

"It's under pressure, and we believe we need to keep that whole area unspoiled, between Pillsbury Lake and, to the west, to Lake Sunapee."

The Sunapee highlands include 30,000 acres of forestland, being threatened by pressure to expand the Mount Sunapee ski area and increase access for off-road vehicles. Ehernberg predicts that could mean the end for the area's natural character.
