“C-Minus” for State Plans on Racial Achievement Gap in Schools

There are proven ways to close the racial achievement gap in California schools, but that's not what state policymakers are doing, according to an analysis from the group Justice Matters. The report gave a "C-Minus" to a state plan to improve the achievement gap for Latino and African-American students.

Researchers with Justice Matters say a recent study shows that some schools have figured out how to close the gap, but the state superintendent's "P-16" Council isn't learning from those schools' successes. At one of them, Sacramento New Technology, nearly all students of color graduate and go on to college. Teacher Chris Williams says the school aims for smaller class sizes, relevant curriculum and a strong relationship with every student.

"I think it requires some serious policy changes. I think we have the ability to make a lot of our choices site-based choices, like how the money is spent for our schools, where our needs are."

Olivia Araiza with Justice Matters adds the council should take a close look at what these successful schools are doing. She believes it isn't tackling the fundamental issues that can turn the achievement gap around.

"We're looking at issues around language, issues around the school culture and whether that matches the student culture, and making sure that resources go to the right places."

The P-16 Council is expected to release its final recommendations early next year. More information is available online, at justicematters.org.
