Minnesota Marks “Human Rights Day

St. Paul, MN – Today is the United Nations' "International Human Rights Day," and commemorative events are planned in Minnesota and around the world. Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison says human rights and protection from an intrusive government both are key to an open society.

"When people are free to vote, free to participate in society without fear of oppression based on their race or religion or their sex, then they can work their own problems out. But if people are denied full participation, then society gets skewed and distorted because we're not hearing from everybody."

The day will be marked in Minnesota by a noon forum at the State Capitol. Ellison notes that one basic human rights issue is the right of workers to join or form a labor union. It's a right he thinks has been diminished in the U.S., but adds there is pending legislation to address it.

"The Employee Free Choice Act suggests that employees, when the majority of them express a preference by signing a card to have a union, that the union will be recognized. This is something that's already done in Canada. It's not foreign, or odd or unusual, or even radical. The rights of labor are recognized all over the world, with the United States being one exception."

Ellison says allowing workers to advocate for fair compensation and dignity is "essential in a free society." He adds that, while union membership nationwide is declining, more than half of all workers (approximately 60 million people) say they would join if they could. He believes they should have that right.
