Greeley, CO - It was one year ago this week that federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents staged a major raid of meatpacking plants across the country, including one in Colorado. Immigrant rights groups are remembering the event, in Greeley and elsewhere, by calling for a new immigration policy and an end to the ICE raids. Gabriela Flora, with the American Friends Service Committee, believes raid tactics are extremely detrimental to local economies.

"The raids only serve to separate families, uproot communities and disrupt local economies. They are not a solution to the challenges that our communities are facing."

Flora explains that the effects of high-profile raids can be felt beyond the immigrant community.

"Economies that are very dependent on both immigrant labor as well as spending and taxes that immigrants pay are having big impacts. We've also seen a lot of fear that it's created and to a lack of workers in many cases."

Supporters of the federal raids say immigration laws should be enforced, and migrant workers should come to the U.S. through legal channels. Flora argues the backlog for legal immigration stretches for decades.

"The fact that we have many people who are contributing to our economy, yet are unable to gain legal status, is reflective of the broken immigration system."

The American Friends Service Committee is one of the participants in the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, advocating a new immigration policy that integrates communities.
