Plan to "Mine" NM Water is "All Wet," Critics Say

Silver City, NM - A whole new form of mining could be taking place in Catron County, but locals and conservation groups say the plan is "all wet." The natural resource a New York company is going after isn't a precious metal, but something just as valuable -- billions of gallons of groundwater, that the company hopes to pump from the San Augustine Basin and pipe to the Rio Grande, to help New Mexico meet its water compact obligations to the State of Texas.

Allyson Siwik with the Gila Conservation Coalition says it's an idea that could endanger the flows of the Gila River.

"A number of threatened and endangered species rely on the Gila's natural cycle of flows for their survival, so we believe that this application is detrimental to the public welfare."

Siwik also believes pumping groundwater to the Rio Grande is a waste of New Mexico's precious water resources.

"Especially when you consider the significant evaporative losses that would result from storage of that water in Elephant Butte Lake, it seems like the state could find other ways to meet its compact deliveries."

Siwik's group has filed a protest of the proposal with the state engineer's office. It's one of hundreds the office says it has received from locals, conservation groups and other government agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service. The company, Augustin Plains Ranch LLC, says its plan could create a new source of water for cities along the Rio Grande, but several opponents say it amounts to a "water grab" that could pit bigger cities against rural areas.
