Ready, Set, Go! "Speed Dating" Offered for MT Farmers and Ranchers

Bozeman, MT – "Speed dating" really can lead to long-term relationships -- at least, for some Montana sustainable producers. Once a year in Bozeman, farmers and ranchers get together with restaurant and grocery store buyers for 10-minute meetings, to see if they are a good fit for each other.

Annie Conley, with the Corporation for the Northern Rockies, says sustainable goods mostly come from small, businesses, that usually are family-run and don't have to time to do either the phone work or footwork it takes to get their products into restaurants and retail venues.

"This provides an opportunity for them to meet in one spot, in one day, and touch base with more people than they might come into contact with in a year."

Restaurants have seen consumer palates shifting towards local, sustainable foods, according to Conley, but consistent supply takes a partnership with the producer.

"As the demand for this sort of product comes up higher, they're having a difficult time getting the supply that they need to maintain a menu item."

This unique method of "speed dating" is part of this month's Commerce Day on January 28, which also includes more in-depth sessions on marketing and production. The event is being held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bozeman. Producers can still apply for the event; more information is available online, at www.northrock.org.
