State of the Union, From a Wisconsin Perspective

Monday, January 28, 2008

Madison, WI – Nonprofit groups around the state are offering their opinions about the "state of the union," leading up to President Bush's address tonight. They're concerned about topics as diverse as bread-and-butter issues, cleaning up the environment, and the healthcare crisis.

A top national issue is the proposed federal economic stimulus package. Robert Kraig, with Citizen Action of Wisconsin, believes the plan before Congress misses the best opportunity to boost the economy and help those hardest hit by an economic downturn.

"Not applying it to increasing unemployment compensation and not increasing food stamps are bad ideas. Most economists agree that these actions would have the most effect on the economy, because people who are poor will spend money immediately because they need to spend it."

Mark Redsten, of the group , says the president should focus on addressing the effects of global warming. He notes that boosting clean energy production would help the state's economy. He also would like to see Bush set solid limits on global warming pollution.

"I wish he would address preventing the proliferation of new dirty coal plants, asking our current fleet of coal plants to clean up their act, and really adopting important legislation that begins to reduce the amount of CO2 that enters our atmosphere."

Jim Flaherty with AARP Wisconsin says the healthcare crisis should be a top priority for the president, with renewed efforts to make sure everyone has affordable, effective coverage.

"Many, many Americans are one major illness or injury away from financial ruin, due to the skyrocketing costs of healthcare."

The "State of the Union" address is scheduled for 8:00 PM Central time, tonight.
