Minneapolis, MN – An environmental watchdog coalition wants to eliminate the use of what they say is a dangerous chemical, bisphenol-A, in the manufacturing process of food and beverage containers.

Lindsay Dahl with Minnesota-based Healthy Legacy says the substance is used in a variety of products and is a proven hormone-destroying chemical when heated.

"It's found in baby bottles, water bottles, dental sealants, and the linings of infant formula and food cans. It poses a serious threat to those most vulnerable among us, which are children."

Dahl argues that exposure to bisphenol-A causes long-term chronic effects and, according to a study by Environmental Defense of Canada, is linked to breast and prostate cancer, obesity, insulin resistance and other hormone-disrupting effects, such as miscarriages.

Dahl says the chemical is a hazard to babies and others and explains the goal is to eliminate toxic chemicals in everyday products.

"Currently, 95 percent of the baby bottles on the market today are made out of polycarbonate plastic, and bisphenol-A is found in polycarbonate plastic. Our exposure is widespread. The Center for Disease Control found 95 percent of Americans have bisphenol-A in their blood or urine."

A bill being introduced in the Mnnesota Legislature would restrict using the chemical in products intended for children.

Other states with pending legislation are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. More information is available online at www.healthylegacy.org.
