Iraq War “Unlikely Alliance” Touted in Illinois
Monday, March 3, 2008
Springfield, IL – They were neighbors but didn't know it at the time, and it turns out they have a lot in common. A U.S. soldier and an Iraqi citizen are touring the Great Lakes region to share their perspectives on the Iraq war and their shared hope for a peaceful future for Iraq. National Guard member Patty McCann of Chicago says looking back to her time in Baghdad in 2003 to 2004 is emotional because she says they were routinely ordered to do things that she now knows are in violation of the Geneva Convention.
"In my experience, and in the experience of many veterans I've talked to, I've found that we had been told to kill people we were not supposed to have killed."
McCann says her other big concern is about the more than four million Iraqis who have had to leave their homes because of the war.
Iraqi citizen Raed Jarrar says the people of his country don't understand why their views are not being acknowledged.
"The majority of the Iraqi people are against this occupation and are demanding that a timetable be set for a complete withdrawal of troops from Iraq."
President Bush has warned that withdrawing troops too soon would result in "chaos" and elevate the risk of civil war in Iraq.
