Prescription Drug Help, Just for Nevadans

Las Vegas, NV – You may have planned on moving to Nevada for retirement, but many retirees are finding they did not plan enough when it comes to paying for the high cost of prescription drugs. Free help is now available for Nevadans who are trying to cope with soaring prescription drug costs. Danielle Thorsen with AARP Nevada says her group's latest poll of members over age 50 shows more than half are extremely concerned about how they are going to come up with the money to pay for their prescription drugs.

"One-in-three members who take prescription drug medication engaged in dangerous practices, such as delaying filling a prescription or deciding not to fill a prescription at all, in order to afford their medications."

Help is available in a new free AARP guide called "Managing Your Medicine -- Rx Drugs in Nevada." Thorsen says it can help many seniors locate programs to help pay for prescription drugs, and also help seniors taking multiple medications keep track of what they're taking.

One place the guide points to for help is the "Nevada Senior Rx and Disability Rx" program. Program manager Laurie Olsen says many Nevadans over age 62 and younger Nevadans with disabilities (aged 18 to 61) can find financial help for their next stop at the pharmacy drug counter.

"Mostly they come to us because they're having problems obtaining the drugs that their doctors say they need because they simply can't afford them; so it is a huge concern."

As they age, many people need multiple medications -- and Olsen says the free AARP guide also provides useful advice about how to manage things if you are taking lots of meds.

"Excellent information about how people can best manage their prescriptions, make sure their doctors are aware of what they are taking, especially if they have multiple doctors, and not only their prescription medication, but things that they buy over the counter, like vitamins for instance."

The "Managing Your Medicine" pamphlet is available at the toll free number 866-389-5652. Nevada Senior Rx Helpline: 866-303-6323.
