Watertown, SD – Guyana is a South American country on the brink of chaos and anarchy. It is also the focus of today's World Day of Prayer observance, when women of all faiths from across South Dakota and the nation observe a common day of prayer for that country. According to the World Day of Prayer Committee, Guyana's voiceless working poor live in constant fear of violence from criminals who walk and stalk the land at will. Watertown prayer day organizer Vivian Westgard says today's global prayer observance is an opportunity to pray for relief for the people of Guyana.

"They have exploitation of women and children, low wages, illiteracy, and they work with HIV-AIDS a lot."

Westgard says 172 countries, including the United States, are participating in today's observance.

"As the sun rises, prayer will be going on all the time until the sun sets all over the world. That's a neat image."

Westgard adds that prayer and action go together, so any offerings received today will be used to provide grants for women's programs in Guyana. The World Day of Prayer is an ecumenical movement that began in 1927 to bring women around the world together each year to observe a common day of prayer.

In Watertown, the World Day of Prayer will be held at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. Offerings to the World Day of Prayer USA Committee can be sent to WDP-USA Committee, P.O. Box 13121, Des Moines, IA 50310.
