St. Patrick’s Day Report: “Green” Energy in U.S. Can Save Emerald Isle

Madison, WI – Ireland's green could turn brown, and the culprit would be climate change, according to a new report. Its co-author, Kevin Sweeney of the Irish-American Climate Project, says global warming is disrupting rainfall and boosting temperatures in Ireland, which threatens to turn the legendary green landscape into a brown patchwork. He says, while the report shouldn't spoil today's St. Paddy's celebrations, he hopes it inspires greater public concern.

"We want people, when the parties are over, to realize that there's more to being committed to Ireland than just celebrating on St. Patrick's Day. If you care about Ireland's green, if you want to help it stay green, then the job becomes, how do we change our energy policies and how do we change our relationship to carbon?"

Even thousands of miles away, Wisconsin's energy choices could make a difference for the Emerald Isle. Center on Wisconsin Strategies Program Director Joel Rogers believes the state's manufacturing sector could be a big winner, gaining jobs in the biofuels industry and energy-efficient construction.

"Making turbines, making electronic controls, making nuts, bolts, gears, and a variety of other things. Those are skills that are going to be in demand, in Wisconsin and in the world."

The report also warns of increased risk of "bog bursts" in Ireland, leading to scarred landscapes similar to California's recent mudslides. Read the full report online, at www.climateofhope.org and www.cows.org.
