Stimulus Checks – And Rip-Offs – Are on the Way

St. Paul, MN – Federal economic stimulus checks will soon be in the mail, and the rip-off artists are already hovering. Pam Johnson with the Minnesota Community Action Agency says the scammers promise to do all the legwork for you, for a small fee. Her advice? Tell them to take a walk.

"Some scam operations are already starting to gear up to try to pull away some of those dollars out of the pockets of folks that are working hard and really deserve this money. There are some phone calls already going out to people -- particularly to seniors or to folks who might not be as consumer-savvy -- just friendly-sounding voices over the phone or mailing fliers that might talk about getting fast money, free money. We always say, if sounds like it's too good to be true, it probably is."

The scammers are personable and good at what they do, Johnson warns, so extra precautions are wise.

"We encourage folks to not give out personal or private information over the phone to anyone that's asking, or telling you that you can get your check quicker, or get it before the IRS sends it to you. We really urge people to wait, and to file your taxes as you normally would. We also encourage people to make use of the free tax preparation sites throughout the state."

She notes anyone with income of at least $3,000 should get a check, which starts at $300, as part of the federal economic stimulus package. However, a person must file a federal income tax return in order to receive the money. A list of free tax preparation sites is available through Minnesota Department of Revenue (by phone at 1-800-657-3989; online at www.taxes.state.mn.us) or from AARP Minnesota.

Johnson adds another scam to watch for is the risk of paying too much to cash your check, by using a payday lending business that charges a percentage of the amount as a "check-cashing fee." When the federal check arrives, any bank or credit union will be able to cash it, at no additional charge. The government-issued checks are expected to be mailed to the first 130,000 households in May.
