A 'Taxing' Experience: New Mexicans Lose Millions on Refunds

Santa Fe, NM - April showers bring May flowers. If you see dollar bills raining down across New Mexico this month, however, it could be the more than $24 million that taxpayers are collectively throwing out the window.

As the IRS' tax-filing deadline looms on April 15, a new report from the Children's Defense Fund (CDF) says in New Mexico, nearly two-thirds of those whose incomes are small enough to qualify them for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) pay a tax preparer to file their forms -- although plenty of free tax help is available.

CDF spokesman Ed Shelleby says anyone making less than $40,000 a year can use an IRS-approved network of volunteer tax preparers, available at locations statewide.

"The volunteers help cut down on the confusion of the process. Assistance is given by trained staff people who know how to make certain that families get the most out of their tax returns. It's a great service that ensures that you get back every dollar you've earned."

The report finds another 23 percent of New Mexicans squander at least part of their refunds on high-interest "refund anticipation" loans. Shelleby believes Congress should establish new rules on such quick-cash loan products, which often have annual interest rates of triple digits.

"Each year, about $3 billion go to these predatory commercial tax preparers, which is money out of the pockets of millions of families across the country."

The lenders argue they're providing a service to people who need money quickly. The Children's Defense Fund is asking Congress to cap interest on the loans.

Taxpayers who are eligible for the EITC can find free tax assistance in their area, by calling 1-800-829-1040.
Additional information about the CDF's report is available online, at www.childrensdefense.org.
